In this post I would like to talk about painting tank tracks and some simple ways you can achieve that muddy, weathered look.
Let's start with a new model...
After base coating the model and applying a light 'soft tone' wash all over I paint the tracks in a dark/chocolate brown colour (I use Army painter Oak brown). Not too worried if a slight amount goes on the wheels or hull. It is meant to be mud after all.
Step 2
Paint tyres black. I also use this space to base coat all stowage or metal areas in black tooStep 3
Drybrush the tracks, in a lighter brown (I use Army Painter 'Monster Brown'). It is also a good idea to apply decals, should you want any prior to this step.
Step 4
Use 'stippling' technique to apply the same colour from Step 3 to the mud guards and lower hull as well as the decals
Step 5
Use a strong tone wash to give some definition to the mud. Be liberal when using the wash on the wheels in particular.
Step 6
Drybrush entire model with light sand colour (Iraqi Sand/Skeleton Bone etc). Aim to hit raised parts and edges. To give added effect I like to use a stippling technique to apply gentle amounts black splatter on the tank, representing oil/dirt/paint chips.
Completed
I hope this post was useful
